Solidification of asbestos fibres with thermal plasma

ABSTRACT
Asbestos wastes in the form of used thermoinsulating fabric were taken as the feed material to solidification process using the unique method of plasma technology. The "Little Jet Arc" thermal plasma chamber was used in the studies of solidifying asbestos and the end product was a melted ceramic material- vitrificate - with only 20% volume of the initial substrate. Similar asbestos waste destruction tests were also made using physical and chemical methods. Solidified asbestos products obtained by various methods were tested for leaching and mechanical strength.

Odpady azbestu używane w przeszłości jako materiał termoizolacyjny wykorzystano jako surowiec do procesu zestalania unikalną metodą plazmową. Do badań zastosowano termiczną komorę plazmową "Little Jet Arc". Produktem końcowym był stopiony materiał ceramiczny zawierający tylko 20% początkowej substancji. Podobne odpady azbestowe były rozkładane także przy użyciu metod chemicznych i fizycznych. Otrzymane materiały badano pod względem wypłukiwalności i wytrzymałości mechanicznej.
